I was very skeptical before watching this movie. I have a bad way with 'old' movies. Effects, acting and editing all just seems too old for me to enjoy[that was the case for Mad Max for instance]. But this movie touch something. We spend almost an hour afterwards discussing the different scenes, plot, directors intentions, the 70's etc… And that must be a good thing for a movie, being able to evoke feelings and the need to talk about it. [saw the new version of 'The Crazies' the day before and it left unmarked in every way] Yes it is old and you can easily spot that, but the film still has a vibe to it, that are kind of hard to explain. Time passes like I don't remember trying before, in a good way. The pace of the movie is special. It starts of very slowly only with a few hint to the darkness that it ends up being surrounded in. Then when madness starts it starts for real and keep pounding on you with a ten ton hammer for an hour. Some of the movie I would say can be considered artful, maybe that's just seen with 2010 eyes. At the point it came out(1973) it must have hit a nerve or two. Since it's gory in every detail, with being unbelievable splatter. Is you get the feeling from me waiving around words here, it's pretty darn hard to explain. Definitely worth the time and I think you'll be able to see modern horror movies in a new light. |
