Who you gonna call? The first Ghostbusters movie was released in 1984 and was a very big hit. This time the same story is being told with female ghostbusters and a male receptionist. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) start a company which specialises in paranormal activity. Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) and Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) soon join the company. The story seems pretty similar compared to the original Ghostbusters. I think the cast worked better in the original Ghostbusters (1984). Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are talented comedians, but this is not their best effort. I think Bill Murray’s sarcasm and Rick Moranis’ nerdy appearance made the original Ghostbusters something special (Harold Ramis, Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson were also good). I like Kate McKinnon’s performance in this new movie (she is the team’s tech geek). Leslie Jones was also quite good (she reminds me of a female Eddie Murphy). I do not mind female ghostbusters, but the male cast in the original movie just worked better for me. The movie contains both humor and horror. The humor does not always work (the soup joke was terribly bad). Chris Hemsworth’s role as a stupid receptionist did not work for me either (especially his dancing scene was horrible). The movie relies heavily on cameos which are used to pay tribute to the original cast from the 1984 movie. We get short glimpses of the original ghostbusters (except Harold Ramis who died in 2014). Bill Murray’s and Dan Akroyd’s cameos worked quite well in this new movie. However, all the cameos also show that the movie has not much original to offer compared to the original movie. Rowan North (Neil Casey) is actually quite good as the bad guy, but unfortunately he does not get much screen time. The Gozer and Zuul characters were corny villains in the original Ghostbusters, but they just worked so much better. Slimer and The Stay Puft Marshallow Man are back, but their appearances do not add much new to this version of Ghostbusters. The new ghostbusters suits look pretty similar to the original movie. Even Ray Parkers Jr.’s theme song is back. However, the Ecto-1 car and the arsenal have been upgraded. The new visual effects look acceptable (mostly standard CGI). However, the final battle did not work as a satisfying climax for me. Apparently, this is one of the most hated movies on the internet (the first trailer got a lot of negative response). I do not think that this version is a total disaster, but the movie could have been so much better, if more original content had been added. Even Ghostbusters 2 works better than this version (Ghostbusters 2 is not as good as Ghostbusters 1 in my world). I would rather have seen Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast passing the torch to a younger generation of ghostbusters. This movie is just another reboot that does not live up to original. |
