Hah! This is getting silly!
I really liked the first Machete. It had some silliness to it, but still kept it together and delivered a solid brainless action movie about a Mexican and his machete. This second installment is a bit more silly at first but still a fun action movie, then something happens and everything starts turning more and more towards the absurd. In my opinion is crossed the border and became a poor movie at several points. I was disappointed.
The movie has quite a fancy cast and quite a few entertaining appearances. The assassin El Cameleon makes it possible for Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Walton Goggins and Cuba Gooding Jr. to play the same character. Silly but fun in a good way.
I also liked the little detail that Charlie Sheen was credited by his original name (and more Spanish/Mexican-sounding name) Carlos Estevez.
Mel Gibson does a good job playing a rather stupid part. It think it is his skill that actually makes it work as good as it does. Well done.
It seems like Danny Trejo is the only one who did not notice the silliness of the movie and takes every part serious. This in itself is quite fun, but it must have taken a lot of will and good acting to keep a straight face through all the absurd scenes going on around him. Madness I tell you!
The effects are way over the top - Tarantino is nothing compared to this. Not only are the actors covered in blood and gore when people are chopped to bits by machetes, speed boats and helicopter blades, but at several points the camera lense gets splashed as well. At the first movie we saw some of this, but here it is more or less constant.
Before the movie started it featured a “fake trailer” of a third installment in the Machete series - Machete Kills Again ...in Space. Even though I like the Machete movie concept, I actually do not hope they will make this. I am afraid it would ruin the last bit of cult movie classic that is connected to the first movie.
If you liked the first Machete movie and you like well produced absurd B-movies, you are going to love this one. For me it was a little bit over the top unfortunately.
