A very serious movie build around an absurd situation. A long way through the movie, you are quite unsure what is going to happen later on in the plot, but then suddenly everything unfolds an the rest becomes quite predictable. I am very tensely drawn to the screen during the first part, as it quite serious and shows the hard life of unemployment in harsh times. Then after an absurd twist of events, it becomes more tragic comedy where you are just waiting for something to go wrong because you know it will come. There is a twist in the end, but that is also predicable, so not so impressive after all. Most of the actors does a good job playing their characters, but I have never really been a fan of Ron Perlman though he does a good job in Enemy at the Gates. I think he fits his part her, but there is still something about him, that I do not like. The worst acting in this movie is done by Joe Pantoliano. His acting is really off - only his makeup is worse. His style and overdoing of his part is so far from the basis of this movie, in my opinion. I was choked and appalled. When the guy Martin dies, I actually more than ones had my doubts that he was dead. I could swear that he moves by himself on several occasions. Is that bad special effects or just bad "playing dead"? Despite my critique of the acting, my rating is a bit above average, as the plot and setting for the movie is very impressive (or should I write oppressive?). That really saves it for me. Watch it with a friend you can discuss it with afterwards. |
