This is not the polished Judge Dredd featuring Stallone. This is raw, dirty and gritty. This is Dredd!
The mood is so sombre and everything seem hopeless from the start (unless you are a filthy ganger of course). This works really well to underline the whole story about the judges and the need for them.
The basics behind the plot (trapped in a high rise under lockdown) works quite good, but it does make the story a bit narrow. I would very much like to see more Dredd movies in this style, as I like the mood, the story and the whole setting, so I am hoping for at least a sequel but preferably a whole series of Judge Dredd movies.
Please note that I have not read the comic books or graphic novels, so my basis for comparison is limited.
There is not a lot of acting from Karl Urban (actor playing Dredd), as his character is quite stiff and non-verbal at best, but what little there is fits with my idea of Judge Dredd.
Olivia Thirlby playing the rookie does an acceptable performance.
I am very impressed now they have managed to turn pretty Lena Headey into the sort of ugly jet quite attractive Ma-Ma. She does a great job herself as well.
The effects are done very nicely and it is a great spectacle of violent explosions, gory headshots and extensive gatling gun fire. I only watched this in 2D, but my guess is that several of the scenes could have been quite impressive in 3D.
Watch this if you like Judge Dredd, if you like dystopian movies, if you like thrilling action in tight situations or if you just want to see a whole story of a highrise get shot to pieces.
