I had very high expectations when I went to see this movie. Too high. I was actually quite disappointed, but it's still a very good movie. In terms of plot there's not much too it, everyone should know how the movie ends quite quickly and it's just a bit too predictable and cheesy at some points. I'm not a big fan of all the silly horror movie style effects. Yes I know it's a Hollywood style movie, but still we're not THAT stupid. Would have been a lot more powerful if the whole thing about the lead actress had been a bit more subtle. Also Natalie Portman never comes across as a character you care about. She's raised in quite a poor home and still the director manages to make her seem like a spoiled little bitch. This is probably the biggest problem with the movie, that you don't care about the lead actress whatsoever. The best thing about the movie is by far the music. Courtesy of Tchaikovsky so that has really nothing to do with the movie makers. Actually I seem to only remember all the bad points about this movie. I was actually going to give this movie an 8, but reading through the above that wouldn't really make any sense so I'm giving it 7. ***MASSIVE SPOILER AHEAD*** Also how fuckin' lame is it that she kills her alter ego/self with a piece of a mirror...that was just so ridiculous haha. |

...::: SPOILER ALLERT :::... The IMDB description of the movie goes like this: "A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan." If this doesn't tell you exactly what to expect, then what does? In the very beginning of the movie you are told that the ballet dancers are battling for the lead role in Swan Lake and at the same time they sum up the plot of Swan Lake, and at this point you had already gotten the notion that Portmans character Nina sees things that aren't there. With those two pieces of information I thought: "Plz don't just make this about Nina internal battle between good and evil" But sure thing that's all folks. Also. Clichés: The way the movie tries to frame one of the other ballet dancers as the potential "evil twin" is just a feeble try. There's a few well put twists and hints, but mostly it's just thrown in without enough thought. I like when movie shows you one thing, but then when you get this tinny little piece of information you start seeing the rest of the movie in another perpective... Black Swan tries but fails. That said the movie has good stuff too. The mix between psychological thriller/(horror) and ballet is very well pulled of. The beauty mixed with dark elements such as a girl going insane is nicely put. I think Vincent Cassel does a great job as Thomas Leroy, a apparently famous ballet actor that uses dirty tricks to get the best of his ballet dancers. Does a good job as a foreigner in the US. Effects or the lack thereof is very nicely done. Subtle and detailed. [though I hate when the cover portraits things that isn't featured in the movie(her crown)] All in all an interesting watch. But NOT Oscar potential. |
