There is not much of a story here, and the plot is highly predictable, but the movie is a cute gamer themed youth film with some genuinely good messages for young people. Those messages go a long way towards making up for the rather small story, and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. The acting from the primary cast is decent enough for a group of young actors. The most robotic performance comes from Ruby Rose, who never really seems committed to the role. Everyone else does a respectable job, even if no one truly stands out. The gaming dynamics during the tournament felt fairly believable. Whenever the movie switched from the real world into the game itself, things naturally became much more unrealistic, but that worked well if you view it as a way of showing the players becoming fully immersed in the game. If you are into gaming or esports, and you are not a grumpy old man, this is perfectly acceptable entertainment. I would rate it six out of ten. |
