Strong Desert Power

I read Frank Herbert’s first Dune book a long time ago.

The book was great, but I was not impressed by Dave Lynch’s movie adaption from 1984. The miniseries from 2000 was acceptable, but still not great.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 1 from 2021 was a good introduction to a modern version of the Dune universe. Dune: Part 2 is even better.

It is still a strong story about nature resources, religious manipulation and strange breeding programs.

The cast is excellent. No really bad castings here.

Timothée Chalamet (Paul Atreides) and Zendaya (Chani) are strong leads. But Javier Bardem (Stilgar) really steals the show as the Fremen leader (he is a religious believer). Austin Butler (Feud-Ratha) also has a very menacing presence as the murderous Harkonnen heir. Josh Brohlin (Gurney Halleck) is a great character, but could have used more screen time in the movie.

I think it was the right choice to cover the first Dune book with two movies (it gives better time for character depth and development). Paul Atreides’ personal journey from innocent boy to hardened desert warrior is described very well in Denis Villeneuve’s two movies. This movie (Dune: Part 2) also shows the different Fremen fractions (some of the Fremen perceive Paul Atreides as a religious messiah. Others are more skeptical).

I saw this movie at an early screening. The movie is epic in every way. We get some impressive desert landscapes and battle scenarios. The CGI is nearly seamless (the sandworms and the harvesters look good). The music and the sound effects are very well done too.

Apparently, Denis Villeneuve would like also like to adapt Dune Messiah for the big screen (it is Frank Herbert’s second book in the Dune universe). A Dune spinoff series from HBO should also be on the way.

Dune: Part 2 is a very well crafted movie. Very close to a modern masterpiece. Probably the best Sci-Fi movie I have seen in a long time.
