This might have been the traditional ending of a movie about the newly wed couple Grace & Daniel. But not when the directors are named Matt Bettinelli and Tyler Gillett, and the movie is one of 2019’s most unusual comedies. “Ready or Not” is a horror-comedy with a supernatural element and Samara Weawing as the lead character the newly wed Grace. And boy is she fantastic. I had never heard about Samara Weawing before I saw this movie, but I am certain, we will be seeing a lot more of this actress after this movie. The movie takes place in an old manor almost exclusively lit by candles, and that gives us many scenes with characters sneaking around in the manor while playing a deadly game of hide and seek. None of the characters have any last names since it makes no difference to the story. As mentioned, the movie is a comedy, but it is a very dark comedy, both thematically and visually. A comedy where the family patriarch Tony, played by Henry Czerny, scolds a family member for murdering the wrong person. The references to Agatha Christie as well as slasher movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th, My bloody Valentine and many more are well done. The action scenes are intense, and the actors do a good job. I also want to add that it is a delight to see a horror movie with a strong female lead, where she does not need to be rescued in the end or doesn’t take independent action until the end. Samara plays a woman who is pro-active and takes matter into her own hand. Even though I really enjoyed the movie, it is a horror comedy and very bloody. So it might not be for everybody. But if you enjoy movies like the mentioned slashers, get the popcorn ready and open a beer or soda and enjoy the bride who refuses to die. |
