The greatest alien conspiracy TV to date, made into a movie. As a kid, when the X-files TV series started getting popular, I was just a bit too young to watch this. I remember getting nightmares every time I watched an episode, and for a very long time, I did not watch it. Later after I grew up I have watched a lot of episodes, and it is really an exciting series. I even had a “I want to believe” poster on the wall in my first own apartment. I still get goosebumps when I hear the theme melody. Watching this movie it feels like they have taken the normal plot for a TV episode and just scaled everything up unconditionally to make it big as a movie. In my opinion that is a shame, as it is just too much. The conspiracies involve everything and everyone on the globe and are just completely unrealistic even without the alien part. (Sorry for the spoiler, but you already knew it was going to be about aliens, I am sure!). A great thing is that it has the same cast as the TV series. You recognize everyone right away. I think that is very commendable. David Duchovny does a great distraught Agent Mulder and Gillian Anderson is perfect as a strict, scientific, yet somehow a bit sexy Agent Scully. William B. Davis playing “Cancer-Man” is, and has always been, very inconvincing when smoking cigarettes. This is highly reprehensible in my opinion, as the entire personality of his character is build up around his smoking of cigarettes. The movie is from 1998, and I think they have used the same team and budget for special effects for the aliens as they did for the TV series - i.e. not impressive but acceptable. However the large explosions, spaceships etc. are scaled up as mentioned before. In some ways it just does not fit in with the rest in my opinion. Well... if you liked the TV series, this is a good movie for your. If you like alien/conspiracy movies, this is not half bad either, but nothing really impressive, If you just want sci-fi and do not have any relation to The X-files, I think I would recommend something else. |
