I went to see this movie with high expectations (I need to stop doing this as I always get disappointed. The Dark Knight, Inception, The Black Swan I'm looking at you!) and they weren't quite fulfilled.

Looking at the whole movie it's basically very plain with no emotional highs or lows. You never really get attached to any characters and there isn't much in terms of character development either. I don't think all the hype about True Grit is justified, not in million years. Hailee Steinfeld was hailed to be amazing in the role of Mattie Ross, but I found her to be very mechanical and not very interesting in the long run (she's great in the first 30 - 40 minutes, but when the novelty wears off, she gets boring and doesn't really show any emotion).

There is some decent build up of anticipation throughout the movie but it all fizzles out in a catastrophe of an ending. Not seen worse since the end of "Knowing". A major letdown.

So why am I giving this a 7? Well it's still nicely crafted and some of the dialogue and characters (Matt Damon's character is quite interesting and Jeff Bridges is great as well, even though his character is a bit of a parody). If you like the Coen brother's earlier films you may like this one. It has some great moments, but all in all it disappoints.

For a movie that has several Oscar nominations, I guess 7 of 10 isn't much, but let me explain why...

I like Westerns, and I even like the way modern westerns is portraid. It's usually gritty and dark, and you get the impression that the wild west was an unforgiving place you would leave first thing if you had a time machine.

There was some genre confusion in this movie. The Coen Brothers have had good succes with making witty genre mixing movies before. But putting Jeff Bridges as tough ass marshal and with a mind the ressembles his role in The Big Lebowski in a serious movie about a girl trying to find her fathers killer just seemed a bit wrong to me.
And also the girl, who is as tough as nails, makes some 'too good to be true' encounters with grownups, that makes it all more fairy tale than western. At the same time, the movie is set in a world of no forgiving, bad weather, little money, and all the other stuff that would do as good place for full blown serious movie. This one is neither... And that fell through in my opinion.

But still worth watching.
