It is an over the top rush and a crazy ride through a depressing necromantic apocalyptic planet invasion combined with a heavy action cat and mouse chase. There is just so much going on all at once. The movie is filled with plot holes, silly scenes that make very little sense, and cheesy lines that are enough to make your toes curl.

The lineup of reasonably well known action actors is impressive, even if the acting itself is mostly mediocre. Vin Diesel is obviously a great fit as the unique and hardcore killing machine that is Riddick. Karl Urban also works well as the upcoming commander, and Thandiwe Newton fits nicely as the seductive manipulator. It still amazes me that they somehow convinced Judi Dench to appear in this kind of movie.

The special effects range from genuinely impressive to moments where I almost wondered if I was looking at plastic props. They are all over the place, although the budget behind the movie must have been enormous.

If you are into large scale space opera movies with tons of action and effects, an oppressive mood throughout, and not much of a real story, then this might be for you. I was not fully convinced, but I was entertained enough that I still want to watch the next installment in the franchise. I would rate it six out of ten.
