Great Marvel sci-fi action!

I am no expert on comic books, and despite all the hype this movie got, I never even heard of the comic books which it is based on. So this review is solely based on my experience of the movie as a sci-fi action movie.

...and a good one at that! I always enjoy a nice set of characters brought together by some circumstance, and this one is really good. It is a motley crew, but they support each other pretty well. Based on my background as a pen-and-paper roleplayer, I cannot help imagining this crew as an ill put together party ready for whatever the Game Master is ready to throw at them.

The plot is pretty basic - dangerous man wants special artefact for taking over the world and the crew of questionable heroes are determined to stop him against all odds. I all sounds pretty easy but once you get into each characters story it gets a little bit more complicated than that. Good stuff.

This movie has a lot of humor for a sci-fi action. Most of it is pretty fun and I actually had quite a few good laughs, but there are a few moments when it tilts over and becomes lame. They do manage to make it work, but it is right on the border, in my opinion.

For me there were no outstanding performance by any of the actors. In my opinion most of them were ranging from mediocre to average. Of cause it is a bit hard to judge when a lot of the characters are more or less completely made of CGI.

A cool thing about this movie is the soundtrack. Already from the beginning the it starts out with 80’ies hit music, and that is the theme all the way through. For a movie taking place in outer space there is just something brilliant about “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede and “Escape” by Rupert Holmes.

After the movie there is a promise that the Guardians of the Galaxy will return. I for one will be looking forward to that. If you like sci-fi action, Marvel movies and similar this is really worth watching.
