This could have been a good movie - if it only had made a choice. The choice is between being either a Chinese Sword Movie (Wushu) or a silly Western Comedy. For me it is a poor mixture of both.

I my mind, Wushu-movie are something poetic - a work of art. They cannot be compared directly with e.g. an action movie, as the point is often something more than just the impressive action of the martial artists. There is a brilliance behind them, that only shines through if you know how and where to look. (I am not saying, that I am an expert though!)
This movie has a little of this magic art-like feeling about it, then the typical American Western kicks in and ruins it all. The silly circus characters are just silly and dumb slapstick comedy, an especially the character Lynne (played by Kate Bosworth) really made me nuts at several points. My guess for inspiration to this character is Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl from Toy Story 2.

It really let me down, and I therefore have to be severe in my rating of this movie, despite it having some actually good moments also.

If you are a dedicated fan of Chinese Sword Movies, this may be worth the watch, as I understand one of the characters is played by a Chinese cult classic actor.
