Not my kind of movie, but I still kind of liked it. The plot was fairly basic, and you kind of already know which conflicts are about to turn up around each corner. But that is really not the point. It is a relevant topic and it goes around explaining and debating it in a very American way, in my opinion. The scope is not that wide and the focus is mainly on smaller things, that will have a happy ending. The acting was impressive and even though it is not one of my favourite movies, I can still see why it was nominated for best movie at the Academy Awards. The movie leaves you with a couple of questions based on your political views: It is right for children to get in touch with their biological parents? Should gay couples be allowed to have children? Can you run a restaurant without a college education? See it and judge for yourself. |

IMDB has this movie listed as comedy and drama, but it's not really a comedy. Jules (Julianne More) and Nic (Annette Bening) are a lesbian couple with two kids Paul and Joni. Joni has just turned 18 and the kids have secretly contacted their biological father and arrange to meet. From here on the story takes us through the complications this new relationship causes. The movie isn't without its flaws, but there's also some absolutely beautiful scenes. I think Mia Wasikowska, who plays the daughter Joni, is pretty amazing. Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo were both nominated for Oscars, but it's just plain that wrong that Julianne Moore isn't recognized for her brilliant performance as well. A lot of people don't like the ending, but watch it for yourself. I'm not really sure what I think about it. |
