Revitalised Terminator The movie starts with a voice over from resistance fighter Kyle Reese (Jay Cortney). We also get a long future war sequence between Skynet and the human resistance. This time, the storyline from T1 and T2 has been changed with heavy focus on time travelling (the storylines from T3 and T4 are ignored). I do not know if this is a reboot or a remix of the Terminator mythology. In the new timeline, Sarah Connor is brought up by an old T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger). In the year 1984, Sarah Connor is no longer the wimpy waitress we know from T1. Instead Sarah Connor is turned into a trained warrior (much like her role in T2). The story of Terminator Genisys does not add much new to the Terminator universe. Instead, the movie takes some of the best elements from the previous four Terminator chapters and creates a new beginning. The most original input is that John Connor is turned into the bad guy (this was already spoiled in the trailers). Skynet is no longer a super computer. Instead, Skynet is now some kind of killer application waiting to take over smart phones and computers. This updated version of Skynet works quite well, I guess. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as T-800 (this time with grey hair and aged skin). Although Arnold Schwarzenegger has turned 67, he still does an excellent job as the aged cyborg. Emilia Clarke gives a positive impression as Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton is still the best Sarah Connor). Jason Clarke is also good both as good and evil John Connor. Jai Cortney did not convince me as Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn was so much better in T1). Byung-hun Lee plays an Asian version of T-1000, but his part does not add much to the movie. J.K. Simmons has a minor role as a confused cop (he is quite funny). The movie has humour (mostly about mating, nude time travelling and Schwarzenegger’s age/smile). Fortunately, the humour does not feel misplaced as it did in T3. The action and the special effects are well done (the old Arnold vs. young Arnold battle is short, but looks good). The rules of time travelling In Terminator Genisys are similar to T1 and T2 (clothes and weapons do not go through the time portal). I like the future war sequence in the beginning of the movie (some of the best future war seen in the Terminator movies). Finally, we see John Connor send Kyle Reese back in time. It is also a good idea to bring back Sarah Connor (she was missed in T3). T1 and T2 were sci-fi masterpieces. T3 and T4 were not that good. Terminator Genisys is probably the best Terminator movie since T2. I watched the movie with very low expectations, but I was surprised in a positive way. If the movie had been more original, I would rate it even higher. If Terminator Genisys is successful (makes enough money), there might be two sequels on the way. James Cameron, who wrote and directed T1 and T2, has called Terminator Genisys the true third Terminator movie. I agree about this. |
