The story is decent, but the writing is very poor. It feels like a B rated action movie with countless situations where I found myself thinking “why?!” because the actions, details, explanations or even just the physics did not make sense. Matilda Lutz does a decent job playing Sonja, but I was hoping for a bit more spark and strength. Something was just missing. Robert Sheehan, playing the Emperor, also does an okay job, but I do not think either his type or his character were fit for an ultimate bad guy. The rest of the cast seems more like extras, some slightly more glorified than others. There are a lot of sword fights, obviously, but a lot of the equipment does not seem fit for combat. They really look like props in a poor movie. That is slightly sad, as the production value could have looked much better if they had paid a bit more attention to the equipment. Overall, this was a pretty disappointing movie for me. They could have done a lot better with better writing. It does, however, end with a big layup for a sequel, and I will most likely be watching that as well when it becomes available for streaming. I would give it five out of ten. |
