Having played the game for a lot of hours, I might have some unrealistic expectations and a bit of bias going in. The story follows the first edition of the game, so you more or less know that everyone is looking for a vault and that the evil guy behind it is going to double cross whoever finds it. The idea of an unlikely hero who ends up caring for a kid and saving the day is also pretty classic. It feels a bit thin, but it fits the genre on an average level, I guess.

Selecting Cate Blanchett to play Lilith was a puzzle to me at first. I was not sure it would work, but it actually turned out okay. Choosing Kevin Hart as Roland was a mistake in my opinion. I see Roland as a strong and natural leader, while Kevin Hart works much better as a comic sidekick. Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis is a perfect fit, although they did not write in enough of the character strange quirks.

I am missing so much from the game. There is a lot of material left out that could have been added, and that is a real shame. Knowing what is missing makes the movie feel even thinner. They clearly spent a lot of money setting up scenes and CGI for a very limited amount of monsters, while so many more creatures, characters, and settings are left unseen.

If you have played the Borderlands game, this is a must see out of pure curiosity. If you just enjoy a silly science fiction action hero movie, this is acceptable, but nothing special.
