This is not how I remember the book.

The plot is somewhat different from the book, as af as I remember, and some of the particulars about the Martians are quite off. Then again, some of it were pretty right on. The story about the family relations between the main characters is a very Hollywood and brings a different layer that draws the viewer away from the actual sombre and paranoid mood from the book.

Tom Cruise does a good action hero, and at certain points throughout the movie it felt like watching a modernised edition of Top Gun. I would have preferred that somewhat different. I am not saying that he might not have the talents, but I think they should have taken a different angle on the character.
Tim Robbins has an impressive presence in any movie he features in. In this one he features as a small side-part, even though the character is bigger in the book, but his persona just shines heavily through.

The movie has a lot of fancy special effects that look really good for a sci-fi movie. That might be the only really goof thing about the movie.

In general, this should be considered as a simple B-grade sci-fi movie, and not a live action movie of a significant cornerstone sci-fi book. I knew this might have been the case, but I was let down anyway. At two or three points throughout the movie, I considered shutting off the movie.

Sorry about complaining so much about the book.
