Well... I had a hangover and needed some brainless entertainment, and that is what I got.

The plot is loosely based on the fairy tale about Jack and the Beanstalk, so basically everything is set already. This twist is however slightly more violent than the story I was told as a kid. it is not brilliant but it is all right.

The acting is also fairly acceptable. I was quite surprised to see Ewan McGregor is a supporting role. Nicholas Hoult, playing the lead role of Jack, annoyed me a bit.
In general the acting was around average, I think.

The writing, on the other hand, was far below average in my opinion. The dialogues were lame, and where some of the scenes were a combination of stoned and outright surreal. I really think that was a shame, and this is the sole reason for my low rating of the movie.

What was actually cool was the effects! I am very impress how they animated the giants and also the actual beanstalks. Nicely done!

In general an acceptable fantasy movie which is poorly written but with impressive visual effects.
