Normally I wouldn't say that I am a particularly big fan of Batman, but when it involves Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane in the dark and some universe created by Christopher Nolan, it greatly does something for me.
The story is sort of an origins tale about how Bruce Wayne became Batman, but it does have a nice twist where it ties a nice knot around it all in the end. I think it is a good way to do the background and buildup for the following two movies while still keeping the plot fresh.

Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors. He is, in my opinion, the best actor ever to have played Batman. Everyone else is measured up against him, and all of them have failed. He may not be perfect as Bruce Wayne, but he makes up for that when being Batman. Morgan Freeman is just brilliant. Playing a quiet genius is perfect for him. He has a certain charm that cannot be best. Gary Oldman is also fantastic. For being a smaller role it is still an important one, and he does it well. Michael Caine is great as Alfred. Humble yet brisk, as only the British can be. Liam Neeson is another favorite of mine, and he performs well. You get a sense of his conviction and it is truly believable.

The action and stunts are going for a Batman movie. I do not think that they are over the top, as most DC movies are, but maybe we have the director Christopher Nolan to thank for that. Obviously everything has you end with a big bang, but it is handled in a controlled manner.

If you like the character Batman, obviously this is a must see. If you like superhero movies, I am pretty sure you will enjoy this as well. This also goes well, if you are just a fan of a good action movie. There is nothing supernatural about this story. It is all science and human skills.
