”The Gentlemen – Style over substance” could have been an alternate but sadly very fitting title.

The movie premiered in in 2019 and it is a crime comedy and an action drama directed by the English Director Guy Richie. Guy Richie never went to film school and is mostly known for movies like “Lock, Stock & Two smoking barrels”, “Snatch” starring Brad Pitt and the “Sherlock Holmes” movies starring Robert Downey Jr. as the title character. His movies are known for having lots of fast editing and memorable lines delivered by men and women who are as dangerous as they are stylish.

But all that focus on style and class sometimes bites Richie in the ass. It sometimes seems like Richie is more interested in telling a good-looking story more than he’s interested in telling a story that’s just a really good story. And that sadly is the case with “The Gentlemen”. The movie has a really great cast, almost everyone looks like they are in an expensive clothing commercial and the shots are mostly super sexy. So the movie is a lot like a sexy woman or man. You enjoy the company but most of the time you focus more on what you look than what you hear.

But what about the plot you ask?

Yes, what about the plot? The plot is mostly irrelevant, and without revealing too much, I can tell you that it is largely told by the smooth journalist Fletcher played wonderfully by Hugh Grant. The gangster Michael Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) wishes to retire as an extremely wealthy man. He is therefore planning to sell his hugely successful cannabis empire. Murder, humiliation, maiming, intrigue and confusion follows.

The movie is very entertaining but in the end it is not because of the story, that I kind off lost interest in halfway through the movie. I was much more interested in seeing the actors do their stuff and deliver their incomprehensible lines while dressed in their sharp suits and expensive trach suits.

So enjoy a nice steak and ignore the head in the freezer, pour a nice English beer and whipe the blood of the glass or enjoy a nice whisky even if it doesn’t cost £1.500 and spend a few hours in the company of a group of ruthless but damn charming Gentlemen and a ruthless and sexy lady.

… and do remember to put on the subtitles.
