For me this is a classic Superhero movie, even though it is quite poor. As it is based on a high profile comic book series from Marvel and the character translates very well into an action movie it really had potential for being something great. However poorly performing actors, stone age animations (even back in 1997) and just a bad execution in general made it flop big time. As I have understood it, the movie was only to be the first in a long series about the character Spawn - just like Spider-Man, Iron Man etc., but as it turned out so bad, they shut down the whole project. I like the character, but have not read any of the comics though, so I am really hoping for a reboot of the movie (and maybe series) like they have done with Spider-Man. Michael Jai White is not a brilliant actor, but if it is a poorly written script or his lack of skills that is the reason for the poor performance in this movie I do not know. The Clown/Violator, played by John Leguizamo, character is just generally annoying, so again I do not know if the actor is fully or partly to blame. Martin Sheen should have done better, even despite a poor script. His performance is also poor. The effects on Spawn’s suit is brilliant and the same goes for some of the other supernatural stuff, but any computer animation is really appalling. Apparently it won “Special Effects Movie of the Year” somewhere. This can ONLY be with regards to the Spawn suit and hardcore gun fights. I remember watching this over and over on VHS as a kid. I have now bought it on DVD, and even though it is not a good movie, I am sure that I will watch it a few times more. |
