John McClane goes to Russia
I watched the latest chapter in the Die Hard saga with very low expectations, and I must confess that I was still disappointed. Actually, the action sequences look good with big explosions and several gun fights. This is also the best thing about this movie. John McClane is described as a grumpy, old man who goes to Moscow in order to reconnect with his now grown up son. I miss the irony and the McClane charm from the earlier movies (I like all the previous four Die Hard movies). Bruce Willis is a cool actor, but this time his charisma is not enough to save the movie.
Jack McClane is played by Jai Courtney which I have not seen in any movies so far. Jai Courtney seems perfect for average action movies (he has great physics, but I am not convinced about his acting skills). In A Good Day To Die Hard, Jai Courtney spends most of his time shooting guns and complaining about his childhood. McClane senior and McClane junior are a pretty anonymous duo on the big screen. The great sidekicks from the earlier movies are greatly missed (Zeus/Samuel L . Jackson was really good in the third Die Hard movie).
The villain in this movie is a Russian politician who reminds of Vladimir Putin. The villain is not scary at all (Alan Rickman/Hans Gruber and Jeremy Irons/Simon Gruber are my personal Die Hard villains because they are worthy opponents to John McClane in their respective movies). In this movie, McClane senior and McClane junior fight their way through several bad guys, so they seem nearly untouchable.
A Good Day To Die Hard is clearly the weakest installment in the Die Hard series.
Perhaps it is time for John McClane to retire?
