Great movie - what a cast! The plot is great and though it is very straight forward and predictable, you are still kept interested and tied to the screen throughout the whole movie. The opening scene showing the landing at D-day give a quit avid picture of how it must have felt - like going the gates of Hell maybe? Brilliant stuff, impressive realistic effects and very scary! Then the walking part of the movie takes you through the fantastic landscape of Normandy which have been wrecked by years of war, and finally ending in a severely shot-to-pieces city. Here good action is fought out, but I cannot help being reminded of the old 1970's movie Kelly's Heroes. The list for the cast is endlessly filled with famous actors. They all did a great job and no one really stood out as an odd one, which is very impressive! Combining the good plot, the great acting and the impressive special effects, it is no wonder, that this movie won 5 Oscars and 53 other prestigious awards. The movie is highly recommendable for people that like action, war movies, WWII movies etc. Gather a big group of friends and watch it on a big screen with the volume on high. |

I've seen this 3-4 times and it's still a very good movie. Since last time I saw it I've seen "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" and I must say that Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg was up to a good start with SPR back 13 years ago. The movie has some of the qualities of a saga. The way you follow a party of men through hardship, pain, sorrow and happiness is very capturing. The only thing missing for getting the same epic feeling as you do when watching "Band of Brothers" the series, is that you don't get the backgrounds of the main characters. It could have work very well for this movie, but since it's 2,5 hours already it's probably a good thing they left that out. Another aspect worth mentioning is the whole political part of the plot. The only reason Tom Hanks character gets send on his mission is because the US Army doesn't want a yet another family tragedy, with all sons of one family dead. Most of this movie is a praise to the American involvement in WWII, but there's a few hints of criticism as well, among those the whole plot, where soldiers are ordered to sacrifice them selfs for the sake of a person they haven't meat yet. The movie has incredible acting, visual- and sound effects, along with a cast that kind of surprised me seeing it again, with people like Vin Diesel and Matt Damon in it =) If you're fed up with American patriotism then this might not be your type of movie, but if you'd like some insight in WWII and like a good war movie, this should be right up your alley. |
