What a strange movie! It was good - but I didn't like it. IMDB listed this movie as a Drama/Comedy. That is definitely wrong. There is NO comedy in this - in my opinion. It is a slow melodrama that will leave you feeling demotivated and depressed. The plot is... well there is none. A guy leaves his depressed, psychological unstable and socially challenged brother (played by Ben Stiller) in charge of his house where the family is on holiday. The brother meets the personal assistance who he both loath, like and really don't care about. That is about it. I think this lack of plot is fully intensional to get an insight into the life of Roger - he has no life. Nothing happens and he both feels stressed out and bored by it, in the same way. I felt that way watching the movie! That is quite impressive, but I still didn't like it. It was interesting to see Stiller in a role like this. He wasn't goofing around or playing an over-powered jackass. He genuinely seemed slow and depressed. Good acting, but I still didn't like the movie. It was also interesting seeing Rhys Ifans playing a more or less sane person trying to save his marriage and family life. He pulled it off with great conviction. The best thing about the movie was the soundtrack. It had a lot of great old rock numbers that really lifted the movie. Most of them would sound good on a stereo as well. That was nice, but I still didn't like the movie. Most of the movies I watch are brain dead action. You watch them in the evening and have forgotten all about them the next day. Junk really... :) This was not the case with Greenberg. I actually made me think a lot. Think about the life he lives, and the life I live. Think about how he reminded me of a friend of mine. Think about a lot of things really... but mostly how I didn't like the movie. In general an interesting movie which makes you think about the people around you and reflect on the life you lead for yourself. I just didn't like it. |
