I like action movies. I like gangster movies and I like a twisted and entwined plots. This movie has all of these, and for the most part it is to my liking. The actors are strong and their stories are to some extend believable. I am a bit fed up with "this is my last week before retirement", but Richard Gere is an impressive actor and pulls the part of pretty nicely. The corrupt cup story have also been used before, but not to same extend. I'm not a big fan of Ethan Hawke, but he does an impressive job here. The undercover cop wanting to get out story is also a remake, and I am less impressed Don Cheadle performance. Again an actor I am no fan of. It is a good cop story and worth the watch if you are into this kind of movie. Good action, acceptable acting and mediocre plot. In order to survive, you need to loose your will to live... |

This movies uses some of the same story telling techniques as Crash, Traffic and Babel, but the focus is all on three different cops in NY, with a widely different background in the force. This base for a story makes me think "Plot twists" would be ideal, but in this movie there're al most none and the ones in it, does have the ability to shock or even surprise much. The movie is well acted from most parts, but since I've just been watching the Brotherhood and The Wire series, I'm all in the gangster setting, and actually do not think this movies pulls the "universe"/setting of as nicely as those two series. It might be because this type of setting requires a great 'relationship' towards the characters, so that you feel with them and so on. Any way I noticed that at least four of the actors from the movie also stars in The Wire, so I guess Mr. Fuqua likes that series as well =) I guess endings are always hard for a director, and this one is a bit disappointing in my book. There's some great visuals in the movie, which helps a lot on setting the tone. Round up: If you like a cop movie this is a must see. If you had enough of these "Different people end up on same place in the same mess" type of movie you do not have to sit through this one... |
