Will Smith plays the robot-hostile policeman who is chosen to fight a glitch in the code controlling all robots by the creator behind the system. In his search for proof, he meets sympathetic robots, pretty scientists and corrupt businessmen. The movie is based on the book by Isaac Asimov with the same title (from 1950!!), and with him as your inspiration you are well on your way to create something good. The plot is quite interesting, and as most good sci-fi, it has at very intriguing view on what could be the downfall with all the new technology. Even though this is a big Hollywood productions with fancy effects and prominent actors, the profound skeptical/paranoid view on autonomous technology is not forgotten. That makes me glad. The cornerstone of the book, which naturally has been adopted to the movie, is Asimov's three laws of robotics: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. If you Google "three laws of robotics" you get 13.4 million hits. Will Smith is great in these kind of rolls and Alan Tudyk playing Sunny also does a very good job combined with the CGI. This brings me to the effects of the movie, and they are in general impressive. Most of it is obviously CGI, but it works quite well. The "physical" interaction with the robots seems realistic and the animation/rendering of the robots is so good that when they perform feats that are beyond human, I caught my self thinking "Hey! That is not realistic... wait! Ahh... I forgot they are robots". But maybe that is just me and my cyber-enhanced imagination? This is in general a solid sci-fi movie that is definitely worth the time, if you are into this genre. |
