The story is about a guy who is about to lose his casino, and he has got a chance to win it back in a big poker tournament. There is nothing more to it. Except, maybe, all the other players around the final table who have also got a story and a reason to be there. This is where the entertainment is. The plot is kind of obvious, you think, but you do not really know until the end how they are going to land it. That works okay for light entertainment. There are a lot of small comedy moments here and there. Some are fun, but in my opinion, most of them bring the quality of the movie down. Woody Harrelson is a great actor, indeed one of my favorites, but even though he has the role as the main character, he is very downplayed in this movie. There are some big names in there as well, Werner Herzog, Dennis Farina and Richard Kind to name a few. They all do well. Cheryl Hines is really good as the mother of five, wife of an out of work husband and super sneaky poker player. Very convincing. The tournament, the video graphics, the clips and cuts all remind me of actual poker tournaments I used to watch on TV when I was younger. Nicely done. The story is a bit too small for my taste, and the plot is too simple to be really exciting. The game parts were well executed, and the back stories were a good idea, but they had too much irrelevant comedy in them. It destroyed the focus, in my opinion. If you enjoy watching poker games, this could be a hit. That is about it. I give it six out of ten. |
