I found this to be a long and impressive history lesson about Alexander the Great. Mostly long. It is an impressive story about a historical Greek king fighting his way towards the end of the world. The story follows a fairly straight line and becomes slightly repetitive, with only a few twists sprouting from betraying commanders. The ending is very brief and abrupt, although I suppose that might not be very far from the original tale. The cast is speckled with brilliant stars. Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Jared Leto and Rosario Dawson are just some of them, and their performances fit their status as some of Hollywood's finest. They make the extremely long story considerably more bearable. As this is partially a war movie, it naturally contains a lot of massive fight scenes. They are still impressive, but the movie makes use of surprisingly few effects and very little CGI worth mentioning. I actually consider that a plus. If you enjoy long movies about Greek heroes, this could be a hit. If you are looking for action and excitement, it might actually be a miss. Personally, I found it too long and slightly boring, especially considering the amount of acting potential that could have given the story more. I would rate it six out of ten. |
