There is not a lot of story here, but who cares? This is constant action in the Mad Max universe, and it is great. You can guess how the movie will end almost from the very beginning, but the journey to get there is long, brutal and entertaining. I generally enjoy origin stories about iconic characters, although I felt that the first part with young Furiosa went on for a bit too long. I would have preferred to see more of her life driving the war rig, and that alone cost the movie one point in my rating. After the final showdown, which was a bit of a letdown in my opinion, there is a short montage connecting this movie to Mad Max: Fury Road. It felt like a quick fix, and that dropped my rating another point.

Anya Taylor Joy had some big shoes to fill after Charlize Theron, or before her actually, and she does a decent job. Furiosa is a woman of very few words, so the performance relies heavily on facial expressions and body language, which she handles well. Her fragile frame could perhaps have been a little more convincing had she looked slightly stronger. Chris Hemsworth was a pleasant surprise as the villain and clearly had a lot of fun with the role.

The scenery is amazing and the cinematography is impressive. That alone makes the movie worth watching. It is obviously not on the same level as the Dune movies, but if you enjoy sandy and gritty post apocalyptic imagery, this delivers. There is plenty of spectacular driving on two, four and even more wheels, and most of it is fantastic. Some moments are a bit over the top, but that is exactly what I expect from this universe.

To me, this is a great movie with high potential, beautiful scenery and a fantastic universe that could easily have earned a nine out of ten. A few shortcuts in the writing and production kept it at a seven instead. If you like the Mad Max universe, this is a must see. The same goes if you enjoy a good post apocalyptic action movie. Overall, it is very solid entertainment.
