A very simple story about an evil queen using a powerful object to conquer the world while crushing anyone standing in her way. One of those people turns out to be the warrior Red Sonja, who naturally sets out to avenge the wrongdoings and stop the reign of terror. Along the way another warrior, Kalidor, suddenly appears to help her for reasons that are never particularly convincing. It is a very standard B rated action movie plot from beginning to end.

The acting is honestly horrible. The dialogue feels awkward and strangely out of sync, making many scenes come across as unnatural and stiff. The stunts and fights are also poorly executed almost all the way through.

Since the movie was released in 1985, the effects obviously come with the limitations of that era. By modern 2026 standards it looks cheap and sometimes even laughable, although I am fairly sure this was considered impressive for an action movie forty years ago. One thing that still stands out positively is the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, which is genuinely impressive.

If you enjoy old fantasy action movies filled with sword fighting, dark sorcery and Arnold Schwarzenegger, then this is a classic you probably should not miss. If none of that sounds appealing, you are better off steering clear of it. I would rate it five out of ten.
