With AI developing around us at an ever increasing speed, this feels more relevant than ever. The story is quite small and unfolds over the course of a single week, but the plot keeps getting thicker with each passing day, building toward a strong and figurative bang at the end. At first I was puzzled and even a bit annoyed by the oppressive and almost sombre mood. As the story moved forward, I began to appreciate it, because it fits perfectly with what the movie is trying to do. I started out disliking Nathan, played by Oscar Isaac, but ended up almost sympathizing with him. Ava, played by Alicia Vikander, seemed awkward and unrealistic at first, yet as she developed I found myself rooting for her. Both performances are excellent. I was less impressed with Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, as I think that role could have been stronger. The computer elements and interactions with the AI are fairly limited and nothing spectacular, but they work well enough for the story. If you are at all concerned about what might happen when AI becomes self aware, this movie offers a compelling take. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in artificial intelligence or human and robot interaction. My rating is eight out of ten. |
