This is more or less a classic installment in the Expendables franchise. The story is simple as expected, but the plot is actually a bit more complicated than usual. It works pretty well for what is essentially a braindead action movie. Jason Statham is in a role that is made for him. Other classic action names like Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Randy Couture and Iko Uwais deliver exactly what you would expect. Sylvester Stallone leans a bit too much into the fact that he is getting old, and that somehow affects his performance. Andy Garcia is a major letdown and feels completely out of place, which is very disappointing. It also feels like Megan Fox was cast mainly to play a sexy part, which is a shame and very stereotypical, especially since she has shown better elsewhere and her character had more potential. Eddie Hall makes a fun surprise appearance. He does not do much, but it is still a nice touch. There are of course tons of explosions, gunfights, blades flying through the air, helicopters and planes crashing, and vehicles and motor bikes jumping and exploding. That is all part of the Expendables package and it definitely delivers. At times it feels like there is an unlimited supply of bad guys who all trained their aim together with Stormtroopers. If you like the other Expendables movies, this is an easy recommendation. If you enjoy extreme action movies with old action stars, this is also for you. Despite being the fourth installment, it is still pretty good and I would rate it seven out of ten. |
