Rebel Ridge is a bleak tale with very little hope woven into its story. It feels like he main character is doomed from the start, yet he keeps fighting and somehow prevails—though the way it all resolves is a bit questionable. It almost feels like two movies stitched together, but surprisingly, that structure works well enough. The acting is what you’d expect from a standard action movie—decent but nothing remarkable. The stunts and fight scenes are fairly grounded for most of the film, but the final showdown takes things to an over-the-top, almost ridiculous level, which feels out of place. If you’re into movies about tough ex-military types taking on a corrupt backwoods police force and broken justice system, this might be worth your time. Otherwise, it’s just a run-of-the-mill action flick without much to set it apart.
