Being a big fan of the Marvel character Black Widow and an enormous fan of the actress Scarlett Johannson I had great expectations for this movie, and I was not let down. What I mean is that this was a decent action movie, revolving around an interesting superhero and her backstory and featuring my all time favorite actress. I am pretty sure that I am heavily biased and my judgment should not be trusted on this one. The story is simple enough - a young girl is forced into a russian spy programme and, after she gets out, spends a significant effort on tracking down the responsible person behind the organization. The plot is rather straight but with a few twists regarding her fellow spies and friends. To avoid spoilers to the only thing remotely unpredictable here, I will not go into further detail, except for saying that most if not all of it is pretty obvious. I am always starstruck by the beautiful and amazing Scarlett Johannson, and this movie did not disappoint in that regard. She does a perfect job (remember that I might be biased and should not be trusted around Scarlett Johannson) portraying the strong willed and highly talented superhero Black Widow. She is emotional and conflicted but maintains it under control, but you sense the inner struggles while maintaining a cool exterior. Well done! Florence Pugh playing Yelena does a decent job playing a teenage brat, if that is what she intended. In my opinion she missed her mark slightly by remaining negative and moody for the entire movie. You would have thought that the training at the Red Room would have taken that out of her. The character Alexi puzzled me a bit. At first I noticed a few details being a bit off, then later on when the identity was revealed I was not sure if I understood it correctly until it became completely obvious. I think that the scale of the role was written poorly, meaning that the mistaken identity was intentional for the sake of the plot but at the sacrifice of the story. Rachel Weiz did an ok job playing Melina. Despite being a central character she did not make a lot of fuss out of it, which left her character and her performance not very memorable. The ultimate bad guy Dreykov is played by the British actor Ray Winstone. I have seen him in numerous British movies and it threw me off that he was portraying a Russian mastermind behind an evil spy organization. This is a Marvel action movie with lots of impressive special effects and great stunts. Everything is well executed and despite the large quantity of gunfights and explosions etc. they have managed to keep it on an acceptable level. All in all a very decent Marvel spin-off/origins story that is recommendable to anyone interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or any fan of Scarlett Johannson (and who isn’t?!) who enjoys action movies. This is one of the Marvel movies that I am pretty sure I will be watching again at some point. |
